They have limitations in high-temperature and high-pressure processes. When gaskets are used, aging and damage can occur, requiring periodic replacement. They are also susceptible to fouling and therefore not suitable for high-viscosity fluids, slurry, or particulate fluids. Due to turbulence formation, the pressure drop (ΔP) increases, which leads to higher pump power consumption.

However, because of their high heat transfer coefficient, they are advantageous in achieving a small temperature approach.
